Mandalay is a huge chaotic city, in my opinion even more than Yangon, with some architecturally and culturally beautiful temples, a pretty street market and some really good local restaurants, but besides that, it didn’t amaze me as much as its surroundings. Mandalay is the former royal capital and it’s located in northern Myanmar on the Irrawaddy River. We decided to dedicate 2 days to the city, which are more than enough but definitely too little if you want to explore the surroundings, which we partially did.
U Bein bridge is located next to the city of Amarapura, close by Mandalay, and with a span of 1,2km it is believed to be the longest and oldest (since 1850) teak wood bridge in the world. The structure is undoubtedly stunning and I found so intriguing observing people activities happening in the morning. U Bein is particularly famous for its sunset views: you can hire a boat and looking at the sun setting in between the bridge poles; however we were discouraged by our guide to visit it in the afternoon. Apparently it has become such a famous location between locals and organized photo tours that not only it is impossible to walk on it at sunset, but the amount of people is truly damaging its structure. We were absolutely happy to be there in the morning: you can observe authentic everyday life scenes and capture monks even without organizing a photoshooting.
I particularly like my main picture, however I had so much struggle while editing it, since the format 4:5 was completely destroying the composition balance. I therefore decided to frame it creating a sliding series. Let me know if you like my little IG hack.
